TSA lock guide

What Does “TSA Lock” Mean?

A TSA-recognized lock does not mean TSA has certified or approved the entire case. For firearm transport, the case must be locked, and the passenger must retain the key or combination used to secure it.

Secure Closure

Helps keep the hard-sided case locked during checked-baggage transport.

Passenger-Controlled Access

The passenger must retain the key or combination used to secure the firearm case.

Not a Case Certification

A TSA lock does not guarantee airline acceptance or make the entire case “TSA approved.”

Important

Firearms are not permitted in carry-on baggage. They must be unloaded, declared, and transported in checked baggage according to current requirements.

Air travel FAQ

TSA Pistol Case Questions

Direct answers based on current TSA and FAA guidance.

Are these pistol cases TSA approved?

No. A TSA-recognized lock does not mean TSA has approved or certified the entire case. TSA requires firearms to be unloaded, secured in a locked hard-sided container, declared to the airline, and transported in checked baggage. Confirm your airline and destination rules before travel.

Can I carry a firearm case onto the plane?

No. Firearms are not permitted in carry-on baggage. They may be transported only in checked baggage when unloaded, declared, and packed in a locked hard-sided container that meets current requirements.

Is a TSA-recognized lock required?

No single lock brand or type is mandated by TSA. TSA states passengers may use any brand or type of lock to secure the case, including TSA-recognized locks, provided the locked case meets current requirements and cannot be easily opened.

Who should keep the key or combination?

The passenger must retain the key or combination used to secure the firearm case. Keep it available in case the airline asks you to return to the ticket counter during inspection.

Can ammunition be packed in the same case?

TSA permits securely packed small-arms ammunition, magazines, and clips in checked baggage under specified conditions, and they may be included in the same locked hard-sided case. Ammunition must not be loose or exposed, and airline rules may be stricter. FAA notes some airlines and international rules limit ammunition to 5 kg (11 lb) gross weight per passenger. Check your airline.
